Gardens for you & wildlife to enjoy
Calytrix Garden Design believes that every garden no matter how big or small, or what style of garden, can provide food and shelter for the wildlife around us.
With the inclusion of a bird bath or water feature, retaining or planting tall trees underplanted with dense shrubs, some grasses with small seeds, nectar producing plants for butterflies and small birds, and a dense covering of mulch, will allow us to share our garden spaces with our local wildlife, for their survival and for our wellbeing.
My journey began 15 plus years ago while propagating indigenous plants of the Victorian Basalt Plains for a local grower and completing my Certificate 3 in Horticulture. The plants were for revegetation works around local creeks and reserves, and for landowners through the council’s seedling program.
Participating in the plantings with a revegetation community group in the Sunbury area for many years, I continued my studies in Conservation and Land Management with the intention to help counter biodiversity loss.
Around this time, I had the opportunity to study a new ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ program supported by the local council, learning of multiple species habitat requirements, and how they can be combined in any garden for beneficial environmental outcomes. These philosophies are applied in my own garden and take the environmental conservation mission into every urban back yard, not just council owned spaces.
Then Covid happened. I found my peace engrossed in my garden and quickly realised this what I was meant to be doing. I worked as a garden nursery manager for a few years, discovering countless more plants and planting combos, and thoroughly loved helping customers DIY their best garden projects.
Formally studying Garden Design has brought all my passions together and resulted in the creation of Calytrix Garden Design. I have the science, the local knowledge, and the passion to help you create a fabulous garden space to spend your relaxing time in.
As our gardens get smaller, the importance of providing habitat, mindfully incorporated into modern garden design is urgent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Garden designers act as 'architects' for outdoor environments. They produce design plans that outline the placement of each plant, the arrangement of paths, roads and structures, and other design aspects such as colour schemes, themes, or styles.
The cost of the design process depends on the size of your garden space. A 'New-build' site of less than 200m2 starts at $2000, a 'Family Garden' of 500-1000m2 is around $4000. This includes your consultation, design concept, working plans, planting plans, lighting, irrigation and hardscape materials schedules.
Hiring a garden designer offers numerous advantages, including professional expertise, time savings, and enhanced property value. Designers bring creativity, knowledge of local conditions, and practical solutions, ensuring a functional and visually appealing outdoor space. They can also help you avoid costly mistakes and streamline the planning process.
The duration of the garden design stage varies widely depending on the size and complexity of the garden. Generally, a concept plan can be created within a few weeks, while a detailed design may take several weeks to months.
A complete landscape design and build project, from initial consultation to final planting and aftercare, could take anywhere from a few months to a year depending on the complexity of the design, the number of revisions required, the availability of contractors, and seasonal conditions required for hardscape construction, and the best time to install the plants.
Yes - of course. A full garden design package provides comprehensive plans with precise measurements and material specifications to construct your entire garden project. You can do this in recommended stages according to your own skill and budget, or request quotes for various components.
The best time to start your garden design consultation is any time.
Ultimately, the best time to start your garden design process is when you feel most prepared to dedicate the time and energy to planning and making design choices.
